Associate Professor in Computational Biology
Job Description Job Duties The employment involves research, teaching, and outreach. The employee is expected to contribute to strengthening research and teaching within the subject area. Over time, the employee is expected to contribute to the department's operations by undertaking various types of leadership assignments. The content and distribution of job duties may change over time, but at least 50% of working time can be dedicated to research.
Research Activities The employee is expected to build their own research environment within computational biology with a focus on mathematical modeling of ecological and evolutionary systems. The research shall complement and connect to the research currently being conducted within the Department of Biology and thereby strengthen existing directions through broadening or deepening. The connection to existing research directions can be advantageously combined with the development of new research areas. The employee is expected to fund their research activities through grants from national (e.g., VR, FORMAS) and international (e.g., ERC, Horizon Europe) funders, and through collaborations with government agencies or organizations working with similar issues. A start-up package consisting of funding for a doctoral student and certain equipment will be offered.
Teaching The employee is expected to contribute to teaching at both basic and advanced levels, as well as the development of courses and programs within the subject area of computational biology. In the short term, the employee is expected to contribute to teaching in, e.g., Modelling Biological systems (BIOS13), Population and community ecology (BIOR69), Conservation biology (BIOR83), Evolutionary biology patterns and processes (BIOR89), Biologisk modellering (EXTG11) and the master's tracks in computational science with a focus on biology and/or bioinformatics (e.g., Bioinformatics and sequence analysis BINP11/17, Applied bioinformatics BIOR93). The employment will include supervision of both degree projects and doctoral students. In the long term, the teacher is expected to take course responsibility and contribute to the development of the faculty's new doctoral education in computational science.
Outreach The holder of the position is expected to collaborate with society by informing about their activities and, where appropriate, contributing to ensuring that research is of benefit by developing existing and initiating new relevant outreach activities at the department.
Leadership Assignments No administrative or leadership tasks are linked to the position, but in the long term, the holder of this position is expected to participate in such work at the departmental, institutional, and faculty levels.
Qualifications To be qualified for employment as an Associate Professor according to the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 4, one must both have demonstrated pedagogical skill and have obtained a doctoral degree in biology or computational science, or have equivalent scientific competence.
For the employment, higher education pedagogical training of at least five weeks is required, or that equivalent knowledge has been acquired in another way. In special cases, exceptions may be made from this requirement. Applicants lacking higher education pedagogical training must undergo such training within two years of the commencement of employment.
For teachers at Lund University, the general qualification requirement is to be suitable for and have the other abilities needed to perform the job duties well.
Assessment Criteria Requirements for employment:
The applicant shall have documented scientific skill in analytical mathematical modeling of biological systems. The applicant shall include a research plan in their application showing how the applicant's research profile, and the planned research, can contribute to, complement, or collaborate with existing research within the Department of Biology. The applicant shall have a documented very good ability to obtain national or international research grants. The applicant shall have experience in supervising students and doctoral students. The applicant shall have varied and documented teaching experience. Documentation should consist of certificates from, e.g., a head of department or director of studies. The applicant shall be able to demonstrate good pedagogical ability and teaching skill. The applicant shall have experience of research at another university after the doctoral degree. The applicant shall have very good knowledge of English. Very good cooperation and communication skills.
Meritorious for the employment:
Experience of other computational science methods such as population simulations, machine learning, or bioinformatics is meritorious. Experience of course development and course leadership is meritorious. Experience of supervising postdocs is highly meritorious. A broad international network is meritorious. Ability to collaborate with society and communicate science is meritorious. Documented skill and experience of leadership assignments is meritorious.
Personal Qualities Personal qualities requested are creativity, strong drive, openness, perseverance, the ability to share knowledge and to collaborate within and outside academia, the ability to respect one's surroundings, and the ability to provide constructive feedback.
Application Design and Content
