Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked as one of the world's leading academic institutions. Here, there are approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our endeavor to understand, explain, and improve our world and human conditions.

Your team

MAX IV is building TomoWISE, a new tomographic beamline aimed at advancing materials science for sustainability. To implement this project, we are forming a specialized team that will develop the beamline into fully functional equipment.

As part of this team, currently consisting of a leading beamline researcher, a research engineer, and a data scientist, you will collaborate closely with experts in both the technical and scientific departments to plan, install, and deploy advanced infrastructure and equipment. You will contribute to developing and maintaining methods for tomographic imaging and support future users of the beamline. The project is led by TomoWISE's leading beamline researcher, and during the project's duration, the team will be part of the Beamline Office Group within the scientific department.

Do you want to work at one of the world's strongest light sources?

MAX IV is seeking a researcher with solid experience in instrument and/or method development for tomography, as well as a proven commitment to supporting and serving the scientific community. The ideal candidate has a background in materials science and a passion for driving research on sustainable materials forward.

The successful candidate will contribute to the construction of a new beamline and participate in designing its initial scientific program, starting as early as during the early commissioning of the large beam option in 2028. In addition to contributing to the beamline project and preparing for its future capacity, the applicant is expected to propose and carry out an independent research project, preferably in collaboration with current and future users of MAX IV.

Your main tasks will be to

  • Contribute to the installation and commissioning of instrumentation at the beamline, including optics, sample holders, and detectors.
  • Contribute to the implementation of relevant software for tomographic reconstruction and image analysis, in collaboration with the beamline team and other internal resources.
  • Drive a research program within national and international collaborations, focusing on materials for sustainability.
  • Present and publish research results internally as well as at conferences, workshops, and in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Collaborate with MAX IV's user community, give lectures, initiate collaborations, and actively contribute to the team's outreach activities.

To succeed in the role, you must have the following qualifications

  • A PhD in a STEM field.
  • A solid scientific profile in materials science, with documented research experience and genuine scientific drive within a materials science area (e.g., structural materials, energy materials, geology, functional materials for sustainability).
  • A solid background in tomographic imaging or related X-ray microscopy techniques, including practical experience in the integration, commissioning, and validation of complex instruments – covering both hardware (optics, sample holders, detectors) and software (data acquisition, instrument control systems, and data analysis).
  • A solid background in experimental research, focusing on microscopy and imaging, preferably using X-ray radiation.
  • Documented ability to drive research projects from proposal to publication, with a collaborative working style.
  • Experience in giving presentations at conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Fluency in English – both spoken and written.

The following will be seen as merits

  • Previous experience working at a synchrotron radiation facility or in a similar environment.
  • Documented ability to drive your own research program, e.g., through previously awarded grants.
  • Experience and ability to prioritize and communicate effectively in the fast-paced environment of a large-scale user facility.
  • A practical approach and commitment to experimental work.
  • Experience working in large collaborative groups, including teaching students, supervision, and grant applications.
  • Ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams and coordinate with internal and external partners.
  • A background in scientific programming is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of AI/ML-based methods for image reconstruction, segmentation, or quantitative data analysis is considered a merit.

As a person, you are curious, self-driven, flexible, communicative, and committed to teamwork. You have a documented ability to handle complex system integration and to coordinate effectively with support groups. Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team, where contributions from technical and scientific staff from different departments are crucial for progress, is an asset.
