Postdoctoral Researcher in Geographic Information Science (GIS)
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked as one of the world's leading academic institutions. It is home to approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our endeavor to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of human life.
The position is focused on GIS and the resilience of transport systems in connection with extreme weather events, with a particular focus on compiling and evaluating existing scientific knowledge. The postdoc will contribute to a knowledge overview of how extreme weather events affect transport infrastructure, mobility, accessibility, and transport-related vulnerability, as well as which methods and strategies exist to strengthen the resilience of transport systems.
Duties
The duties of the postdoctoral researcher primarily involve conducting research. Teaching may be included in the duties, however, at most one-fifth of the working time. Within the framework of the employment, the opportunity will be provided for three weeks of higher education pedagogical training.
The specific duties include:
Review, assess, and synthesize existing research on how extreme weather events affect transport infrastructure, transport networks, travel behavior, mobility, and accessibility. Develop a publicly accessible Web-GIS platform to explore and analyze knowledge bases based on geography, type of weather-related hazard, infrastructure, population groups, and climate adaptation measures. Conduct studies to assess and strengthen the resilience of transport systems using GIS, complex network analysis, and machine learning. Simulate human mobility in response to extreme weather events (e.g., floods and heatwaves) using agent-based modeling. Publish research results at scientific conferences and in high-impact scientific journals. Supervise bachelor's and master's theses. Perform administrative tasks related to the above duties.
Qualifications
To be qualified for employment as a postdoc, you must have obtained a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree, within the subject area of the employment, and have obtained it no more than three years before the date of the employment decision. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been obtained earlier.
Other requirements:
Research competence in GIS, including documented knowledge in GIS, spatial analysis, spatial modeling, and GeoAI. Experience and competence in Web-GIS development as well as good knowledge of central techniques in the field, such as development of web interfaces, web cartography, spatial databases, and web services. Experience and competence in graph-based deep learning for intelligent transport infrastructures and transport systems. Experience and competence in simulation and prediction of human mobility using agent-based modeling and deep learning methods. Very good knowledge of Python programming for processing, modeling, and data mining of geospatial data. Scientific publications in high-quality international peer-reviewed journals within a relevant research area, with particular emphasis on experience in publishing scientific review articles. Very good ability to express oneself in speech and writing in English. Good collaborative skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary research environment. Very good knowledge of English, in speech and writing.
Assessment Criteria
This is a merit-based employment primarily focused on research. The employment is intended as an initial career step, and the assessment of applicants will primarily be based on their scientific merits and potential as a researcher.
Special emphasis will be placed on scientific ability within the subject area.
When hiring a postdoc, the following shall constitute the basis for assessment:
Good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research, based on the above requirements.
Additional qualifying assessment criteria are:
Knowledge and experience in cloud technology as well as solutions for monitoring and automation. Experience with foundation models and Large Language Models, LLM. Experience of teaching GIS-related courses at bachelor's and master's levels. Experience in supervising bachelor's and master's theses.
Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department and contribute to its future development.
Terms of Employment
The employment is fixed-term for a maximum of 2 years and is intended to be 100% full-time. The employment is limited in time according to the agreement, “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor”, between the labor market parties dated 2022-02-01 (Arbetsgivarverket, OFR:s, and Saco-S). Desired start date 2026-11-01.
Instructions for Application
The application must be written in English and include:
Curriculum vitae/CV including a publication list. A general description of previous research work and future research interests (max three pages). Contact details for at least two references. A copy of the doctoral degree certificate as well as any other certificates/transcripts you wish to invoke.
Welcome with your application!
