We are seeking a postdoc in rhetoric with a focus on textbook studies from a cross-cultural perspective. The employment is aimed at you who have a background in rhetoric or another relevant discipline that includes knowledge of rhetoric in theory and practice, e.g., language subjects, media and communication studies, didactics and/or pedagogy.
The Subject Environment
The research environment in Rhetoric at SOL emphasizes the reception history and potential of classical rhetoric. This includes research projects that critically and constructively examine communicative challenges and opportunities in today's society. A central research focus is the educational tradition of rhetoric, argumentation in theory and practice, in situ-rhetoric, textbook studies, and democratic education. Research is conducted using, for example, qualitative and exploratory methods such as text studies and action research.
Tasks and Responsibilities
You are applying for the position with a proposal for a research project that clearly contributes to illuminating the place of rhetoric in modern textbooks from a cross-cultural perspective. The project could ideally focus on handbooks in practical rhetoric in different cultural contexts or on textbooks in schools in different cultural contexts. Your research project can also relate to other arenas for rhetoric teaching, e.g., within law, various forms of activities outside the school environment, and informal learning situations outside established educational institutions. We welcome proposals where selected classical rhetorical concepts (e.g. techne, dunamis, ethopoeia, controversia) have a central significance, as well as proposals involving a research design that includes so-called mixed methods.
You will work with your own proposed project in collaboration with colleagues in rhetoric and adjacent subjects. You will be assigned a mentor and also offered support for your continued academic career.
In addition to your own research project, you will work on organizing seminars and building various networks. Together with your colleagues in rhetoric and adjacent subjects, you will establish contacts and build national and international scientific collaborations.
You are expected to participate in the research environment through active participation in seminars and other research-related activities. The tasks require regular presence at the workplace.
Within the framework of the employment, you are expected to write at least two peer-reviewed scientific articles or a peer-reviewed scientific monograph.
The employment is intended as an initial step in your career and as an opportunity for you to further deepen and broaden your research competence. The employment also includes certain pedagogical merits. Teaching, supervision, and other teaching-related tasks may occur within the framework of the employment, however, at a maximum of one-fifth of the working time.
Qualifications
The assessment will primarily be based on your scientific merits and potential as a researcher. Particular weight will be placed on scientific ability within the subject area.
Requirements for the employment are:
- a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree in rhetoric or another adjacent discipline that includes knowledge of rhetoric in theory and practice, e.g., language subjects, media and communication studies, didactics and/or pedagogy. The doctoral degree must be obtained no later than the time the employment decision is made, and as an applicant, you need to supplement your application before this time with documentation confirming the obtained doctoral degree
- good ability to develop and conduct research of good quality
- pedagogical ability
- that you have not previously been employed as a postdoc with support from current collective agreements for more than one year within the same or a related subject area at Lunds universitet
- good ability to write and speak English and sufficient knowledge of languages relevant to your own proposed research project
Meritorious for the employment are:
- a doctoral degree obtained no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons such as illness, parental leave, trade union positions, service within the total defense, or service/assignments relevant to the subject area, this time can be deducted from the time elapsed since the doctoral degree was obtained
- documented experience of research with relevance to the focus of the employment
- documented experience of working in research projects
- documented experience of participating in interdisciplinary and international research collaborations
Terms
The employment is time-limited to a maximum of 3 years and concerns full-time according to the Agreement on time-limited employment as a postdoc.
