Engineer/Physicist in applied electromagnetism
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked as one of the world's leading academic institutions. There are approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees here in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and human conditions.
MAX IV operates two storage rings and a linear accelerator to generate synchrotron radiation. The facility's largest accelerator, the electron storage ring with an energy of 3 GeV, was the first in the world to use a multi-bend-achromat structure (MBA), which enables synchrotron light with ultra-high brilliance and very low emittance. Today, only a few such storage rings are in operation, although many facilities worldwide are now being upgraded in this direction.
To maintain its leading position, MAX IV is planning an extensive upgrade of the 3 GeV ring, called MAX 4U, with the goal of significantly improving the light source's performance. The upgrade includes, among other things, the development of innovative magnet and RF systems.
MAX IV is seeking an engineer/physicist in electromagnetic systems who can contribute to the development of new electromagnetic systems for MAX IV and MAX 4U, with the possibility of gradually taking on increased technical responsibility for important accelerator components.
Your team
You will work in the Accelerator Development group, which consists of experts in several accelerator areas, including accelerator physics, RF structures, magnets, and laser systems. The group is part of MAX IV's accelerator division, which is responsible for the development and operation of all accelerator-based light sources at MAX IV. The department is also responsible for carrying out the extensive upgrade of the accelerator within the framework of the MAX 4U project.
About the role
Electromagnetic systems are central to the performance and development of MAX IV's accelerators. The reliability and precision of the systems are crucial for stable operation and for being able to deliver high-quality light to our users. Within the framework of MAX 4U, several advanced accelerator systems will be developed and commissioned. We are therefore looking for an engineer/physicist in electromagnetic systems who will play a key role in this development, while also contributing to strengthening MAX IV's internal competence and supporting our existing accelerator systems.
Do you want to be part of developing next-generation accelerator technology at one of the world's most prominent light sources?
Your main tasks will be:
Design, development, testing, and commissioning of advanced electromagnetic systems for MAX IV and MAX 4U, for example:
RF electron guns DC and AC magnets RF-based structures
Contribute to the technical responsibility for electromagnetic accelerator subsystems. Preserve and strengthen the internal competence in electromagnetic systems. Support the operation of the MAX IV accelerator systems.
To succeed in this role, you are required to have the following qualifications:
University degree in engineering science or physics or equivalent. Fluent English in speaking and writing.
The following are considered merits:
Experience with tools for electromagnetic design and simulation, such as CST Studio, COMSOL, GdfidL, or FEMM. Previous experience in the design of electromagnetic systems for particle accelerators, such as:
RF electron guns DC and AC magnets RF-based structures
Project management competence. Experience working with particle accelerators.
As a person, you are cooperative and enjoy working in teams, while also being able to work independently and take your own initiatives. You are curious, eager to learn new things, and have a genuine interest in technology.
What we offer
As part of our MAX IV team, you will step into a world of groundbreaking research. We make the invisible visible by supporting researchers from all over the world and creating scientific results for the benefit of society. We offer you a multicultural work environment with great opportunities for personal development and respect for a healthy balance between work and leisure.
Do you want to work in a challenging and supportive environment? Then come to us and take the chance to truly make a difference!
