Researcher in nanowire solar cell development for space applications
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked as one of the world's leading universities. It has approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our endeavor to understand, explain, and improve our world and human conditions. Lund University welcomes applicants with different backgrounds and experiences. Equality, equal opportunities, and diversity are fundamental principles for all parts of our operations. Description of the workplace The position is linked to the Department of Solid State Physics at the Department of Physics, a department with approximately 100 employees where extensive research is conducted, centered around various aspects of nano- and semiconductor physics, ranging from materials science to bio- and quantum physics with various applications. The department is a central part of NanoLund, which is Lund University's large interdisciplinary research center for nanoscience and nanotechnology. Also part of the operations is Lund Nano Lab, a central and shared facility for the fabrication of materials and components at the nanoscale. The department also has a strong commitment to undergraduate education, not least within the engineering program “Teknisk Nanovetenskap” at LTH. Tasks In this position, you will be responsible for the development of nanowire solar cells for space applications. The ZEUS project focuses on promoting the development of innovative and radiation-resistant nanowire solar cells with high efficiency. While current space-tested nanowire solar cells offer approximately 15% efficiency with single-bandgap cells, ZEUS aims to significantly improve this efficiency, potentially up to 47%, by using triple-junction nanowire cells using III-V semiconductor materials. The project aims to achieve scalability by transferring nanowire solar cells to lightweight, flexible substrates. The main goals include: Increasing the efficiency of radiation-resistant nanowire solar cells. Scaling up the substrate size to 100 mm^2 and developing modules with a size of 1x1 cm2. Reducing weight and material use through nanowire scaling and substrate reuse.
The project is an EIC Pathfinder-challenge project, which may require travel for project meetings and collaboration with the other partners within the project. The tasks include: In the tasks as a researcher, the primary component is to conduct research. The purpose of the employment is to develop one's independence as a researcher and to create conditions for further meritation. You will work with the synthesis of nanowires, surface passivation, and processing these into solar cells for space applications. Characterization of the nanowires and evaluation of these with respect to external quantum efficiency (EQE) and current-voltage characterization (IV), also inside a scanning electron microscope, will be part of the project. Qualifications Those who have obtained a doctoral degree are eligible to be employed as a researcher. Proof that the eligibility requirement is met must have been submitted no later than when the employment decision is made. Requirements for the employment are: obtained a doctoral degree in physics or chemistry very good knowledge of English, both oral and written experience of epitaxy, MOVPE, and nanowire growth of III-V materials experience of cleanroom and processing of semiconductor samples, such as wet etching, photolithography, metal evaporation, etc. good ability to work independently very good collaborative skills
Merit for the employment is: characterization of nanowire-based structures (I-V, EQE, PL, EBIC, photocurrent measurements) material characterization with EDX, SEM, TEM. fabrication of components at the nanoscale. previous meritorious post doc position, experience of continued research in a laboratory environment after graduation.
We offer Lund University is a government agency, which means you receive special benefits, generous vacation, and a favorable occupational pension. Read more on the university's website about Working with us. Other The employment as a researcher is time-limited during the period 2027-01-16 to 2027-12-30 and concerns a 100% scope. Researchers are covered by the ”lokalt kollektivavtal om årsarbetstid för forskare och biträdande forskare”. The planning of the annual working time is carried out in dialogue between the manager and the employee. How to apply The application shall contain a CV and a personal letter with a motivation as to why you are interested in the position and in what way the position matches your merits. The application shall contain a certificate of doctoral degree and should also contain other things you wish to invoke (copies of grades, information for references, letters of recommendation, etc.). Welcome with your application! LTH – Lunds Tekniska Högskola – is part of Lund University. At LTH, we educate people, build knowledge for the future, and work hard to develop society. We create space for brilliant research and inspire creative development of technology, architecture, and design. Here, nearly 12,000 students study. Every year, our researchers – many of whom work within world-leading profile areas – publish approximately 100 dissertations and 2,000 scientific findings. A range of research results and student works are refined into innovations. Together we explore and create – for the benefit of the world. The Department of Physics is one of Lund University's largest departments with approximately 400 employees. At the department, there are seven research departments and a number of larger center formations. Research at the department covers a wide spectrum of modern physics. www.fysik.lu.se.
