Description of the workplace
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student for a research project focusing on studying and countering age-related blood diseases. The research group is housed within the Department of Molecular Medicine and Gene Therapy and is part of the Lund Stem Cell Center. The department has a strong research focus on hematopoiesis in mice and humans, both during development and in adulthood, with the goal of translating research results into a clinical context. In our immediate environment, there are several core facilities (FACS-core, translational genomics-core, viral vector-core, ES/iPS-facility, CRISPR-core and proteomics-core) that cover a wide spectrum of expertise and provide you with good conditions to carry out ambitious projects in an efficient manner.

Tasks and responsibilities
In addition to following the study plan for the doctoral program, as well as participating in relevant courses for the education, the following tasks are also included:
Handling and preparation of bone marrow and blood from mice and humans for analysis Flow cytometry and FACS ELISA and other analyses for protein quantification Cell culture of blood stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells and organoids Work with laboratory mice (breeding, euthanasia, injections, sampling, genotyping) Bioinformatic analysis of data from flow cytometry, mass spectrometry and sequencing Ongoing compilation of work and presentation of data to participating researchers.
The PhD student shall actively participate in local and international seminars, meetings and important conferences and present the project at these in accordance with the study plan. Work with animal models is included.
The PhD student has individual responsibility to:
Formulate relevant research questions Plan and perform relevant experiments Seek contact with the colleagues who best support a discussion regarding the results Find ways for career support Formulate, develop and optimize the ways for communication with supervisors and colleagues that best promote the PhD student's working methods and components.
Requirements for the employment are:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in biotechnology or equivalent Education in laboratory animal science (LAS – laboratory animal science) Formal education in flow cytometry and FACS as well as solid experience in multi-parameter flow cytometry Experience working with laboratory animals, specifically extraction and preparation of hematological tissues (e.g., blood, bone marrow) from mice Solid experience in cell culture, especially modern techniques for culturing blood stem cells and mesenchymal cells Good knowledge in analysis of flow cytometry data in FlowJo Experience of bioinformatic analysis of mass spectrometry data Experience with the programming language R or similar Experience with ELISA analyses Documented good knowledge of scientific English Very good ability to work independently.

Since the research group has an international environment, it is required that you have good communicative ability and are good at collaborating. Additionally, the tasks require that you are organized and have the ability to prioritize your tasks.
Meritorious for the employment are:
Experience of working within international, collaborative research projects Previous participation and presentation at scientific conferences In-depth education/courses within stem cell and cancer biology Formal education in gene modification techniques such as CRISPR Knowledge in molecular hematology, especially with a focus on blood stem cells and age-related blood diseases.

The employment is time-limited to four years at full-time according to HF Chapter 5 Section 7 with desired start date on October 1, 2026 or according to agreement.
Eligibility
Basic eligibility for education at the doctoral level is held by those who have: completed a degree at an advanced level, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level, or have in some other way within or outside the country acquired mainly equivalent knowledge.
Basis for assessment
Provisions for employment as a PhD student are found in regulation SFS 1998:80. As a holder, only those who have been admitted to education at the doctoral level may be appointed. When filling the position, attention shall primarily be attached to the degree of ability to assimilate the doctoral education. In addition to the obligation to engage in their own doctoral education, the holder may be required to perform duties concerning education, research and administrative work according to special provisions in the regulation.
