Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked as one of the world's leading academic institutions. There are approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of people.

Lund University welcomes applicants with different backgrounds and experiences. Equality, equal opportunities, and diversity are fundamental principles for all parts of our operations.

Description of the operations

The Planet Formation Group at the Department of Physics, Division of Astrophysics at Lund University, is seeking a PhD student to work on models of planet formation on a galactic scale. Research at the department includes galaxy formation, galactic dynamics and evolution, star formation and dynamics, stellar evolution, stellar spectroscopy and astrometry, planet formation and dynamics, as well as exoplanet atmospheres.

Being a PhD student

As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.

As a doctoral researcher, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in thinking critically and analytically, solving problems independently using the correct choice of methods, and gaining research ethics awareness. Additionally, as a PhD student, you are given the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and your pedagogical ability. Throughout your period of study, you will be guided by supervisors. The doctoral studies conclude with a thesis and a doctoral degree.

General study plan for doctoral education

Subject and project description

We are seeking a PhD student in theoretical astrophysics. The PhD student will study how planets form at different times and in different regions of our galaxy. The PhD student will also calculate how certain planetesimals are ejected from planetary systems to become freely flying interstellar planetesimals. The PhD project will provide astronomers with new insight into where interstellar comets come from.

Tasks

You will primarily devote yourself to your doctoral education, which consists largely of writing a doctoral thesis. Additionally, you are expected to

Conduct research within the subject areas of planet formation and galaxy formation Publish results in high-quality journals Present results at national and international conferences

In addition to the studies, a maximum of 20% of working time may be devoted to teaching and other departmental work.

Qualifications

To be admitted and employed as a PhD student, you need to meet the requirements below.

Eligibility requirements

You meet the basic eligibility for education at the doctoral level if you have:

a degree at an advanced level or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level or in some other way acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.

For doctoral education in astronomy and astrophysics, the basic higher education must include physics, mathematics and/or equivalent technology as essential parts. In addition to 60 higher education credits in basic physical subjects, the special eligibility requirements consist of at least 60 higher education credits in courses of immediate importance to astronomy and astrophysics. These can be courses in astronomy or other physical subjects, or in technological subjects (e.g., space or control engineering). Of these 120 higher education credits, at least 60 higher education credits must be at an advanced level.

Special eligibility may also have been obtained through other equivalent education, which is assessed in each individual case.

To enable interdisciplinary initiatives as well as significant deepening within certain areas, qualifications other than the applicant's subject-specific competence in astronomy and astrophysics may be taken into consideration.

Other requirements

To undertake the current doctoral education, the following are also required:

good ability for independent work and the ability to formulate and approach scientific problems. good ability for written and oral communication good ability to cooperate very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written

Merit

experience in analyzing and working with models of planet formation or galaxy formation very good numerical and analytical problem-solving skills and experience with programming languages (e.g., Python and Fortran) very good knowledge within the subjects of planet formation or galaxy formation
