Lund University welcomes applicants with different backgrounds and experiences. Equality, equal opportunities, and diversity are fundamental principles for all parts of our operations.

MAX IV is seeking a researcher for the state-of-the-art AC-SPELEEM beamline MAXPEEM to further develop the spectromicroscopy program, which includes developing instrumentation, expanding user groups, and conducting certain independent scientific research.

Your team

The MAXPEEM beamline is intended for nanometer-resolution spectromicroscopy on magnetic materials, semiconductor components, metal alloys, heterogeneous catalysts, and other nanostructured surfaces using SPELEEM. The beamline provides the state-of-the-art aberration-corrected SPELEEM microscope with VUV and soft X-ray radiation with variable polarization. The team consists of six members – three researchers, two postdocs, and one technician – who actively drive several research and development projects within magnetism, 2D-materials, surface science, and industrial applications.

Do you want to work at one of the world's brightest synchrotron light facilities?

Your main tasks will be:

To ensure stable and optimal daily operation of the beamline, including all instruments, software, and associated facilities, as well as preparing for planned user experiments. To provide support to users during the setup and execution of experiments at the beamline. To ensure that the technical infrastructure is always available and work towards improvements that contribute to a user-friendly beamline. Contribute to the continuous development and implementation of methods and beamline instrumentation. Conduct procurements for the development and maintenance of the technical infrastructure. Together with the beamline manager, perform feasibility assessments of proposals. Communicate with the beamline team members and other relevant personnel at MAX IV as well as external partners. Inform existing and potential new users about the beamline's current capacity and upgrade plans. Create and maintain documentation for the beamline. Have solid knowledge of general and organizational safety rules and requirements as well as instructing users and team members. Conduct your own research program in collaboration with users or team members and acquire external funding. Play an active role in the development of the beamline's research portfolio. Supervise temporarily employed staff (postdocs, doctoral students, and master's students).

To be successful in this role, you are required to have the following qualifications:

A doctoral degree in physics, materials science, chemistry, or equivalent. Documented experience in conducting experiments with techniques based on soft X-ray synchrotron within the areas of magnetism, ferroelectricity, 2D-materials, surface science, or equivalent. A clear publication record in peer-reviewed journals highlighting results from your research and your experimental activities. Documented experience in performing experiments with photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) or low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM). Experience in programming (e.g., Python, C++, Matlab, Igor Pro, or others) for data analysis. Experience in using and maintaining ultra-high vacuum equipment. Documented ability to work independently. Excellent knowledge of English, good communication skills, and ability to collaborate.

The following are seen as merits:

Practical experience of photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) or low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM). Experience in programming for automation or data acquisition. Experience in user support at synchrotron facilities.
