PhD student in nuclear safety
Project description
Doctoral subject: Physics, specializing in Nuclear Engineering
The nuclear safety group of the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Technology researches accident phenomena that are essential for the risk assessment of current and future nuclear reactors. The group also performs safety analysis for nuclear power plants, including analysis of design-basis accidents and severe accidents. The research projects involve extensive international collaboration.
We are looking for a PhD student to conduct cutting-edge research on accident management during severe accidents of light water reactors. The doctoral project is supported by funds from Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten (SSM).
The work involves (i) digitizing the paper-based, lookup-table-like procedures in the severe accident management guidelines (SAMG) to be selected, which facilitates the implementation of SAMG during severe accidents; (ii) developing an AI-supported tool for the diagnosis of plant damage using measured and estimated data (e.g., simulation results from American NRC codes); and (iii) combining the digitized SAMG with the AI-supported tool for effective accident management.
Supervision: Professor Weimin Ma is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. The decision will be made upon admission.
