The Department of Micro and Nanosystems at KTH announces a PhD position. We are seeking candidates who have a desire to conduct cutting-edge research in the field of medical MEMS (microelectromechanical systems).
As a PhD student in MEMS, you will be part of an interdisciplinary research group consisting of individuals with different professional and cultural backgrounds. All projects involve both theoretical and experimental tasks as well as collaboration with other scientific disciplines.
The doctoral project aims to develop next-generation minimally invasive sampling systems for neurobiomarkers. The work includes developing the technical platform and evaluating it in relevant in-vitro and in-vivo models. Several research challenges within biomechanics, miniaturization, and microfabrication will be addressed in the projects. Your research will be application-focused and address real-world problems. You will work in a highly innovative environment in collaboration with medical experts at Karolinska Institutet and SciLifeLab.
Supervision: Professor Niclas Roxhed is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. The decision will be made upon admission.
Eligibility for admission
To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have the following basic eligibility:
completed a degree at an advanced level, or fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level, or in some other way, acquired within or outside the country, knowledge mainly corresponding to this. A Master's or a civ.ing-degree from a recognized university in mechanics or equivalent.
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to Engelska B/6.
Selection
To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. During the selection of applicants, the ability to:
independently drive your work forward, collaborate with others, maintain a professional approach, and analyze and work with complex issues, will be assessed.
The applicant needs to have an excellent academic record, well-developed analytical skills, problem-solving skills, as well as an aptitude for experimental work. Good proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is necessary to publish and present research results in international conferences and journals. Experience with fine mechanics is meritorious.
After the eligibility requirements, great importance will be placed on personal qualities.

Information about admission and employment
Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as a PhD student. The total period of employment may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral studies for four years. An employed PhD student may, to a limited extent (at most 20%), perform certain tasks within, e.g., education and administration. A new employment as a PhD student is valid for at most one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for at most two years at a time. For studies intended to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral studies for two years.
