Full-stack Engineer (payments Core)
About the Role
The Job Holder will drive the technical build and continuous evolution of our core payments processing engine — the services that authorise, capture, settle and reconcile every transaction on the platform. The Job Holder will operate across enterprise-grade managed and open-source environments, ensuring the platform remains stable, auditable, and continuously deployable under regulatory scrutiny.
Key Responsibilities
Design, build and maintain services covering the full transaction lifecycle: authorisation, capture, refund, reversal, settlement, and reconciliation. Own webhook delivery, retry logic, idempotency, and signature verification frameworks. Extend and maintain services built on a mainstream enterprise object-oriented framework with an enterprise relational database. Design and operate background job orchestration for scheduled and deferred workloads. Author and maintain advanced database logic — stored procedures, triggers, and database replication — with a strong eye on performance and consistency. Deploy and support services in both Windows and Linux environments (containerised workloads, shell-driven operations, service management). Contribute to scripting and operational automation across multiple shell and scripting environments. Collaborate with the QA + DevOps Engineer to keep the payments smoke suite green on every release. Participate in the Engineering & Development on-call rotation as first responder for payments-related P1 incidents. Interface with the Parent Company's Security and Systems Admin teams on infrastructure, hardening, and compliance evidence. Collaborate daily with Adjunct Product Management, QA + DevOps, and the Integration & Tech Support sub-team.
Source Control and Delivery Pipeline
Our team runs on GitLab end-to-end — source control, merge requests, code review, CI/CD pipelines, and delivery tracking. You should be comfortable authoring and maintaining .gitlab-ci.yml pipelines, working through merge request workflows with reviewers, and using GitLab Issues / Boards during sprints. Advanced GitLab CI/CD experience (reusable templates, matrix jobs, artefact and cache management, deployment gates tied to the automated test suite) is a strong plus.
Must-Have Technical Experience
Strong production experience with a mainstream enterprise object-oriented framework used for distributed, transactional services. Advanced skill with an enterprise relational database — query authoring, stored procedures, triggers, and replication. Production experience with a background job / scheduled task orchestration library. Fluency in Windows shell automation and Unix/Linux shell scripting. Working knowledge of client-side scripting and a widely used DOM/utility library for maintaining legacy front-end components. Working knowledge of at least one server-side scripting language commonly used in legacy web modules. Comfortable deploying, operating, and troubleshooting services on Linux (service management, shell, log tailing, scheduled tasks). Practical experience with GitLab for source control, merge requests, and CI/CD pipeline authoring (.gitlab-ci.yml). Fintech / payments domain experience is critical — direct exposure to at least one of: payment gateways, card processing, wallets, mobile money, acquiring, or settlement systems.
Experience & Education
Minimum 5+ years professional software engineering experience, with at least 2+ years in fintech / payments. Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience. Fluent written English; able to author clear technical documentation and communicate with non-technical stakeholders.
Nice-to-Have
Working knowledge of PCI DSS, ISO 27001, and ISO 22301 control frameworks and evidence preparation. Advanced GitLab CI/CD experience — reusable pipeline templates, matrix jobs, artefact management, and integration with automated test suites and deployment gates. Containerisation and CI/CD pipeline experience beyond GitLab basics. Experience with observability stacks (metrics, logs, traces). Experience contributing to disaster recovery and business continuity drills.
Compliance & Confidentiality
Comfortable working under PCI DSS, ISO 27001, and ISO 22301 control frameworks with Parent Company security and continuity oversight. Signs standard NDA at offer stage; understands that stack, architecture, and vendor specifics are disclosed only after signing and only on a need-to-know basis.
