Accountabilities:
The Staff Database Engineer will serve as a technical authority responsible for designing, evolving, and maintaining highly scalable database systems. This role will lead architectural decisions, improve database reliability, and enable engineering teams to build efficient, secure, and high-performing applications through strong database practices.
Design and evolve scalable, highly available database architectures supporting transactional and analytical workloads.
Define long-term strategies for data storage, access patterns, and database modeling aligned with organizational growth.
Evaluate and introduce new database technologies, cloud capabilities, and architectural patterns.
Diagnose complex performance issues and implement improvements through schema optimization, indexing, query tuning, caching strategies, and architectural enhancements.
Establish performance monitoring standards, identify scalability risks, and proactively optimize high-volume workloads.
Own database reliability initiatives, including backup strategies, disaster recovery planning, replication, and high-availability solutions.
Partner with infrastructure and reliability teams to improve automation, observability, and operational efficiency.
Implement data governance, security controls, access management, encryption practices, and data integrity standards.
Lead technical discussions, architecture reviews, modernization initiatives, and large-scale database improvements.
Mentor engineers and promote database engineering excellence across technical teams.
Build automation tools and workflows that improve developer productivity and reduce manual operational efforts.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in database engineering, architecture, and large-scale production environments. You should combine strong technical depth with excellent communication skills and the ability to influence teams across an organization.
8+ years of experience in database engineering, data architecture, or similar technical roles.
Deep expertise with relational database technologies such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Aurora, or SQL Server.
Strong SQL skills with advanced knowledge of query optimization, indexing strategies, and database performance tuning.
Proven experience designing and scaling high-throughput, mission-critical production systems.
Extensive knowledge of backup, recovery, replication, high-availability, and disaster recovery strategies.
Ability to troubleshoot complex interactions between applications, infrastructure, networks, and databases.
Strong scripting and automation experience using technologies such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
Experience with cloud-based data platforms including AWS RDS/Aurora, DynamoDB, BigQuery, Snowflake, or similar technologies is preferred.
Familiarity with distributed databases, microservices architectures, event-driven systems, or streaming technologies is a plus.
Background in data modeling, governance, enterprise architecture, or large-scale modernization projects is beneficial.
Strong leadership, communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills.
Benefits:
Competitive base salary range of $175,000 - $195,000 USD.
