Purpose

The Staff Metrology Engineer serves as the technical leader for dimensional measurement systems, inspection strategy, and metrology engineering across the organization. This individual establishes measurement methodologies, develops scalable inspection architectures, and ensures the organization's metrology capabilities support both prototype development and high-rate production.

Operating as the technical authority for metrology, this role defines standards, develops advanced inspection technologies, and solves the organization's most complex dimensional measurement challenges. The Staff Metrology Engineer partners closely with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Automation, Quality, and Production to ensure measurement systems accurately capture engineering intent while improving throughput, repeatability, and manufacturing capability.

Beyond execution, this role is responsible for building the organization's long-term metrology capability through standardization, automation, technology selection, mentoring, and continuous improvement.

The Role

Lead the development and standardization of enterprise metrology strategies, inspection methodologies, and measurement best practices across CMMs, optical systems, portable metrology, and emerging technologies.

Develop, optimize, and maintain advanced inspection programs, templates, and automated workflows using PC-DMIS, ZEISS Inspect, PolyWorks, Spatial Analyzer, and related metrology platforms.

Serve as the technical authority for complex dimensional investigations, including measurement uncertainty, root cause analysis, tolerance stack-up validation, fixture variation, and statistical capability studies.

Design scalable inspection strategies and alignment methodologies for complex components, large assemblies, prototype development, and high-rate production.

Partner with Design, Manufacturing, Automation, and Quality Engineering to provide Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Inspectability (DFI) guidance while supporting new product introduction.

Evaluate, introduce, and industrialize new metrology technologies, equipment, software, and automation solutions that expand organizational capability, improve inspection accuracy, and increase production throughput.

Drive continuous improvement initiatives by optimizing metrology processes, inspection workflows, standard work, and data analysis methods to improve quality, efficiency, and scalability.

Establish and maintain metrology standards, procedures, program libraries, and documentation within the AS9100 Quality Management System, including support for AS9102 First Article Inspection requirements.

Analyze dimensional data to identify manufacturing trends, improve process capability, support SPC initiatives, and provide actionable engineering recommendations to cross-functional teams.

Mentor Metrology Engineers, Programmers, and Inspection Technicians while leading cross-functional technical initiatives that advance inspection automation, standardization, and organizational metrology capability.

Basic Qualifications

Ability to lawfully access information and technology that is subject to US export controls

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).

8+ years of progressive metrology engineering experience in advanced manufacturing environments.

Expert knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5).

Advanced programming experience with multiple metrology software platforms, including PC-DMIS, ZEISS Inspect, PolyWorks, or equivalent.

Experience with fixed CMMs, optical scanning systems, portable arms, and large-volume metrology equipment.

Strong understanding of measurement uncertainty, Gauge R&R, MSA, SPC, and capability analysis.

Experience developing AS9102 First Article Inspection Reports.

Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings, CAD models, and manufacturing documentation.

Demonstrated experience solving highly complex dimensional measurement problems.

Excellent communication, technical leadership, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Aerospace, automotive, or defense manufacturing experience.

Experience with laser trackers, Spatial Analyzer, photogrammetry, CT scanning, or robotic inspection systems.

Experience with automated metrology cells and inline inspection systems.

Familiarity with Siemens NX, Teamcenter, or equivalent PLM environments.

Experience integrating metrology equipment with automation and MES systems.
