Roles & responsibilities

The KC-130J Avionics/COM/NAV Technician will troubleshoot and/or repair malfunctions in the aircraft avionics, communication, navigation systems, and all other supporting aircraft systems that require avionics skills and knowledge. Perform assigned maintenance to specified KC-130J standards, including operational testing procedures and required functional tests in support of the KC-130J maintenance manual series.

Performance abilities include the application of troubleshooting, maintenance, and servicing procedures such as inspection and repair of aircraft wiring, wiring connectors, breaker assemblies, component removal, inspection, and reinstallation. Duties require thorough knowledge of electrical, avionics, and COM/NAV engineering principles, techniques, and methods necessary to repair and maintain aircraft, applicable equipment, and systems.

Possess competent abilities in the use and application of hand tools, power tools, and associated precision measuring equipment used in system testing, evaluation, and operation. Ability to read and interpret manufacturers' maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, diagrams, schematics, and other specifications to determine feasibility and methods of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components.

Major job activities description:

Apply thorough working knowledge of COM/NAV and avionics systems including aircraft modification procedures and experience with specific avionics systems such as data bus, antennas, software, displays, communications/navigation equipment, systems integration, system/component failure analysis, inspection, repair, and testing of COM/NAV and electrical systems.

Troubleshoot and/or repair malfunctions in aircraft avionics, communication, navigation systems, and all other supporting aircraft systems requiring avionics skills and knowledge.

Perform assigned maintenance in compliance with established directives and specified KC-130J maintenance requirement cards (MRCs) and maintenance instruction manuals (MIMs), including calibration procedures and required functional tests.

Maintain and service supported components including wiring and wiring connector condition, breaker assemblies, component removal, inspection, and reinstallation, incorporating applicable technical directives and bulletins.

Use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring equipment in support of system testing, evaluation, and operation, complying with established local tool control programs.

Interpret maintenance instruction manuals (MIMs) and associated maintenance publications, orders, and directives, and document maintenance actions accurately.

Read, interpret, and apply manufacturers' maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, diagrams, schematics, and other specifications to determine repair or replacement methods.

Use illustrated parts breakdowns (IPBs) to determine material requirements, research part numbers, and order parts to complete maintenance actions.

Apply practical knowledge of wiring schematics of aircraft COM/NAV and avionics systems and interpret technical data within those schematics and maintenance data sources.

Perform periodic special, hourly, conditional, and phase maintenance/isochronal inspections as required by MIMs, MRCs, manufacturer’s specifications, and applicable directives, orders, and instructions.

Remove, troubleshoot, inspect, reinstall, and/or replace aircraft COM/NAV and avionics components, radios, antennas, electrical wiring, and associated electronic components as directed by approved maintenance manuals and procedures.

Perform applicable organizational and intermediate level battery maintenance functions as required by maintenance manuals.

Perform tasks associated with EKMS as directed by relevant authorities.

Conduct scheduled and unscheduled maintenance actions including cross-training in essential technical specialties to facilitate removal, inspection, repair/replacement, installation, and testing of aircraft component parts, survival equipment, pneumatic systems, environmental control systems, fuel systems, avionics systems, aviation life support equipment, airframes, and power plant systems.

Inspect, control, and prevent corrosion of aircraft metals and system components using established and approved procedures.

Checkout and operate necessary support equipment for flight line maintenance of established procedures.

Conduct off-station maintenance when required.

Perform other duties critical to program support as necessary.

Material & equipment directly used

Must have working knowledge of and be proficient with computers, aircraft data debriefing and diagnostic software (DTADS), and maintenance information systems.

Working environment

Environmental conditions vary from office environments with little or no physical discomfort to environments with inclement weather, severe temperature changes, inadequate lighting, dust, and wind. Occasionally, work may be required in high noise hazard areas where hearing protection is mandatory.

Physical activities

Physical demands include frequent sitting, reaching with hands and arms, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and climbing on aircraft and maintenance platforms. Occasionally, lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds is required.

Desired candidate profile

Education / certifications:

High school diploma

Must be able to obtain and maintain the following required certifications/qualifications:

Aviation Gas Free Engineering (AVGFE) certification

Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) run qualification

Intermediate level battery maintenance certification

Applicable support equipment licensing

Electric Shop & Comm Nav (210 & 220) Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) qualification

Electric Shop & Comm Nav (210 & 220) Collateral Duty Quality Assurance Representative (CDQAR) qualification

Corrosion prevention and control qualification

Confined space entry certification

Experience:

Four years maintenance experience in the C-130J Avionics/Communications/Navigations specialty preferred.

Working knowledge of first aid procedures for emergency use.

Strong knowledge base of aviation maintenance programs, processes, and procedures including safety, tool control, HAZMAT, inspection programs, administrative requirements, support equipment, calibration, and torque programs and procedures.

Specific requirements:

Must be willing to administer, maintain, and manage maintenance programs such as tool control, HAZMAT, FOD, and MetCal as required by local policies.

Must be willing and able to comply with all program functional requirements including:

Performing intermediate level maintenance functions supporting in-flight refueling reel/system maintenance, nose and main landing gear tire rebuilding, main landing gear brake repair/rebuilding, battery maintenance support, and oxygen regulator testing/repair.

Deploying off-site as required to support operations.

Working flexible hours including day shift, night shift, weekend duty, and travel as part of a maintenance recovery team.

Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and follow instructions on assigned tasks.

Skills and aptitude to cross-train and support other maintenance technicians in completing assigned maintenance actions including daily inspections, marshalling/recovering aircraft, fueling, towing, mooring, and post-flight procedures to ensure aircraft are properly secured.

As a subject matter expert, perform in-depth research, troubleshooting, and intermediate level maintenance functions on all applicable aircraft systems and components to return aircraft to full mission capable status. This includes determining material requirements, researching part numbers, ordering, tracking, and receiving materials.

Communicate directly with customers, pilots, aircrew members, management, and maintenance personnel to gather and relay pertinent data to ensure timely aircraft departures and prevent launch delays.

In-depth knowledge of aircraft technical orders, job guides, publications; ability to read, interpret, follow, and comprehend schematic diagrams, drawings, charts, and technical publications.

In-depth knowledge of flight line operations including aircraft and vehicle movement, safety, and hazards.

Ability to overcome cultural differences, think innovatively, and provide solutions to complex problems associated with international contracting and desert climate operations.

Perform as a team member contributing to the success of the maintenance department.

Dependable and timely in managing assigned tasks and performing consistent quality maintenance.

Proven ability to work independently with minimal direction.
