METEOROLOGIST

You will serve as a METEOROLOGIST in the CLIMATOLOGY DIVISION of FLT NUMER OCEANGPHY METEO CTR. GS-11: $93,358 - $121,371 GS-12: $111,896 - $145,468

Major duties

• You will develop and distribute tailored climatology products requested by warfighters in support of a wide range of decisions.
• You will seek out and evaluate improved or state-of-the-science climatology datasets and methodologies for incorporation into the operational production of climatology products.
• You will design, develop and utilize custom operational software tools and analysis code for the scientifically correct manipulation of climatology data to generate products to meet unique mission requirements.
• You will evaluate, upgrade, modify and maintain scientific observational and reanalysis databases used in the climatological analyses and generation of decision support products.
• You will present scientific and operational results in a general public forum and produces a technical document for inter-agency distribution. Act as Government expert on climatology in hearings and/or investigative actions.
• You will participate in inter-agency working groups or committees to provide authoritative technical perspective in the area of operational climatology.
• You will perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

GS-12 In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience evaluating and implementing forecasting practices, methods and techniques for weather analysis and prediction. Experience evaluating Meteorology and Oceanography (METOC) data to make Meteorology and Oceanography (METOC) products. Experience utilizing advance programing languages (such as Python, Perl, MATLAB, and shell scripting) on advance operating system (such as Linux) to manipulate and visualize large scientific datasets. Experience applying Meteorology and Oceanography (METOC) data to make assessments of the climate system, climate oscillation, and global teleconnections. GS-11 In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience interpreting climate oscillation associated with global teleconnections. Experience utilizing different program languages such as python or UNIX shell scripting to prepare Meteorology and Oceanography (METOC) products. Experience making operational recommendations on general meteorological condition. Experience assisting in forecasting practices, methods and techniques for weather analysis and prediction. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess Basic Requirements: Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included: At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of: Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;* Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale); Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.* Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.* At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science. * There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major. or Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. GS-12: There is no educational substitution for basic requirements and specialized experience for the GS-12. GS-11: There are no educational substitutions for basic requirements. Basic requirements are required for this position. However, the following are educational substitutions for specialized experience. Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. OR Successful completion of three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree.
