BETA is seeking an experienced a Payroll Specialist to oversee multi-state payroll operations in a fast-paced, high-growth startup environment. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience managing complex multi-state payrolls, processing equity compensation transactions, leveraging HRIS technology, and ensuring compliance across multiple jurisdictions while maintaining the highest level of accuracy and confidentiality. Payroll Operations

Process and Support all aspects of multi-state payroll processing, including payroll calculations, deductions, adjustments, hours worked, and benefit deductions, ensuring accuracy and compliance

Process and support weekly and bi-weekly payrolls, maintaining comprehensive payroll records in systems and managing all updates

Process and support equity-related payroll transactions, including RSUs, PSUs, stock option exercises, and other equity compensation events, ensuring accurate taxation, reporting, and compliance.

Administer and monitor time tracking throughout the company

Support month, quarter, and year-end payroll processes and reporting

Compliance & Tax Management

Stay current with multi-state payroll tax laws and regulations, processing payroll taxes accurately and on time

Handle tax filings and reporting requirements across multiple states

Maintain solid understanding of employment law, HR compliance, payroll law, and local, state, and federal regulations

Support regulatory compliance and reporting for payroll, benefits, leaves, and workers compensation

Prepare and audit payroll processes for maximum accuracy

Systems & Reporting

Utilize and optimize HRIS systems such as Paylocity, or similar platforms

Generate regular and ad-hoc reports from HRIS systems

Analyze payroll data for accuracy and compliance, providing insights and recommendations based on data analysis

Support HRIS implementation, configuration, and testing including modules, workflows, and user access permissions

Process Improvement & Strategy

Identify opportunities for process improvements in payroll systems and procedures

Streamline procedures and implement best practices to enhance efficiency and accuracy

Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements

Support development and administration of various payroll plans and procedures

Collaboration & Support

Reconcile payroll accounts, investigate and resolve discrepancies in payroll data

Address employee inquiries and provide support to the payroll and finance team

Build strong relationships with internal and external teams through great communication

Provide guidance and mentoring to junior payroll team members

Work closely with cross-functional teams using good judgment and discretion

Minimum Qualifications:

Education & Certification

Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or related field highly preferred

Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification preferred

Experience

Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in payroll processing and administration

Proven experience with multi-state payroll, taxes, and reporting

Experience with HRIS systems such as Paylocity, or similar platforms

Experience processing equity compensation transactions through payroll, including Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), Performance Stock Units (PSUs), stock options, and employee stock purchase plans (ESPPs).

Strong understanding of the payroll tax implications of equity compensation, includingsupplemental wage taxation, withholding requirements, and year-end reporting.

Technical Skills

Proficiency in payroll software and HRIS systems

Strong proficiency in Google Suite, MS Word, Excel (advanced), and PowerPoint

Ability to generate and analyze complex payroll reports

Above and Beyond Qualifications:

Experience with Canadian or international payroll regulations

Track record of implementing or upgrading HRIS/payroll systems

Experience managing payroll through organizational changes or M&A activities

Strong leadership and team-building skills

Understanding of system development life cycle

Ability to work independently and with cross-functional teams

Effective presentation skills for communicating insights behind payroll data

Experience in a high-growth startup or manufacturing environment

The wage listed here reflects our best faith estimate for this role. We pay competitively and base compensation on a variety of factors including skills, experience, industry background, and the evolving needs of the role. Compensation $65,000 — $100,000 USD
