Principal Product Designer
AI products are easy to demo and hard to design. Ours generates cover letters, rewrites resumes, scores job fit and applies on someone's behalf. Every one of those moments raises the same question for the user: do I trust this enough to let it represent me to an employer?
That question is the design problem, and it is why this role exists.
Your remit
You are the most senior designer at the company. You set the bar for craft, own the design system, and take the hardest surfaces yourself. Three product squads, two other designers you mentor without managing. If you want to move into management later we can talk, but this is an individual contributor role and it is paid like one.
Problems waiting for you
The application review step, where people decide whether to send what the AI produced and where most drop-offs happen. The resume editor, which is powerful and intimidating. Mobile, where over half our traffic sits and where the experience is clearly a port rather than a design. And the quiet one: how we show confidence and uncertainty in AI output without either hiding it or making people nervous.
How design works here
Designers write. You will be expected to make an argument in prose, not only in Figma. Research is lightweight and constant, usually five users a week rather than a quarterly study. You will prototype in whatever gets the answer fastest, including code if you are comfortable there. Engineers build directly from your files, so the files matter.
Practicalities
$210,000 to $265,000 plus equity, remote across the US. We will ask to see two projects in depth, including one that did not work. Then a working session on a live problem from the list above, a conversation with engineers, and a founder chat.
Responsibilities
Design the highest-stakes surfaces: application review, the resume editor and mobile.
Set and maintain the design system across web and mobile.
Establish patterns for showing AI confidence, edits and uncertainty honestly.
Run lightweight research continuously and feed it into roadmap decisions.
Raise the craft bar through critique and mentoring of two other designers.
Prototype quickly to settle arguments with evidence.
Partner with engineering closely enough that shipped work matches intent.
Qualifications
You have eight or more years designing consumer software, with at least one product you can walk through end to end and defend. You are strong in interaction detail and systems thinking, and comfortable working on AI features where the output is probabilistic. You write clearly and argue with evidence.
Required
You must be authorised to work in the US without sponsorship. Remote within US time zones, with overlap for critique sessions in the Pacific morning.
