Network Planning Engineer, Charging
What to Expect The Network Planning Engineer, Charging will own the demand modeling that determines how Tesla's charging network grows. You will build and run the models that translate vehicle program forecasts into concrete answers about where, when, and how large our charging sites need to be. The output of your work directly informs site build decisions and the capital plans that fund them.
This is a hands-on, build-oriented role on a small team. You will own modeling end to end - sourcing and validating the underlying data, developing the models, and defending the assumptions behind them to both field teams and leadership. You will build the data foundation you need rather than hand requirements to someone else, because a model is only as credible as the data beneath it.
You will also own these models in production. The planning cycle runs on them, so keeping them accurate as programs evolve and upstream data changes matters as much as getting the first version right.
Success in this role requires genuine modeling judgment, not just technical execution. Tesla is scaling charging infrastructure for several very different vehicle programs at once - ranging from a mature passenger fleet with years of utilization history to new programs with no operating history and plans that evolve quickly. Each demands a different modeling approach. This person must know what level of fidelity a decision warrants, ship a defensible answer on the timeline the business needs, and be clear about what the model does and does not know.
What You'll Do Develop and own demand models across Tesla's charging programs
Build and maintain validated datasets for network planning, including quality checks and documented refresh cadence
Maintain models in production - monitor accuracy, correct drift, and adapt as programs and upstream data change
Translate vehicle program forecasts and plan changes into updated charging demand projections on a regular planning cadence
Ensure planning cycles are reproducible and auditable, with versioned assumptions and documented inputs
Partner with business logic and field-facing teams to drive clear site timing, sizing, and location recommendations
Document model assumptions, limitations, and sensitivities so outputs can be defended to senior leadership
What You'll Bring Degree in Engineering, Operations Research, Statistics, Economics, related quantitative discipline, or equivalent experience
3+ years of direct experience owning a forecasting, capacity, or demand model in production, where business or capital decisions were made on its output, or equivalent experience
Experience maintaining models over time, not only building them - monitoring accuracy, handling upstream data changes, and keeping recurring runs trustworthy
Strong SQL and Python; able to independently build and maintain data pipelines without dependency on a platform team. Fluent with AI-assisted development tools
Experience with geospatial or spatiotemporal analysis
Demonstrated ability to explain a model and its assumptions to both technical and executive audiences, with sound judgment on model fidelity - a proven history of shipping a defensible first version rather than over-engineering
Experience in EV charging, utilities, transportation networks, logistics, or infrastructure capacity planning, or modeling fleet or commercial vehicle charging behavior, a strong plus
