Functional Health Coach

A Functional Health Coach is a healthcare professional who applies principles of functional medicine to nutrition, focusing on identifying and addressing root causes of health issues through personalized dietary and lifestyle interventions under the supervision of a licensed provider. Unlike traditional nutritionists, they integrate lab testing, genetics, gut health, and environmental factors to create holistic plans that prevent and reverse chronic conditions like autoimmune disorders, metabolic issues, diabetes, and digestive problems.

Core Responsibilities & Duties

Conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments, including detailed health histories, symptom analysis, and current lab assessment ordered and interpreted by a Medical Provider.

Develop and implement individualized functional nutrition plans in collaboration with the medical provider, incorporating therapeutic diets (e.g., anti-inflammatory, low-FODMAP, ketogenic), supplementation, and behavioral strategies.

Collaborate with medical providers to co-manage patient care, providing nutrition recommendations that complement medical treatments and monitor progress through follow-up visits.

Educate patients on functional nutrition principles, empowering them with tools for sustainable lifestyle changes via in-person, virtual, or group sessions as part of an integrated care model.

Document patient encounters, care plans, and outcomes in electronic health records (EHR) systems in alignment with provider directives, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and clinic protocols.

Maintain current knowledge of emerging research in functional nutrition and integrative health through continuing education ensuring alignment with clinical best practices and organizational standards.

Contribute to the development of training and educational programs for the Functional Health team

Participates in delivering training sessions

Assist with clinic operations and patient care activities as needed, within training competency and scope of practice

Additional responsibilities as needed

Qualifications

Strong analytical skills for interpreting labs and root-cause analysis.

Excellent communication and coaching for client education and motivation.

Knowledge of biochemistry, nutrigenomics, and holistic health (e.g., gut-brain axis).

Proficiency in nutrition software to track and support nutritional knowledge and support, motivational interviewing, and evidence-based dietary guidelines.

Interpersonal skills for building trust in collaborative environments.

Must have a valid Oregon driver’s license and willing to travel as needed

Experience & Education

At least 1 year of job-related experience in nutrition and/or wellness/lifestyle coaching.

Degrees and Certifications

Required: High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred: Bachelor’s in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related Health Science field

Certifications: Wellness coaching; Motivational Interviewing; Holistic Nutritionist (AFPA), Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS)

Required: Current BLS and/or CPR/AED Certification

Salary Range for this Role $23.01 — $27.08 USD
