Revenue Accountant
Accountabilities: Lead technical accounting, revenue accrual modeling, and reconciliations across recorded music revenue streams, including digital streaming platforms, downloads, statutory royalties, physical product sales, synchronization licensing, master licensing, and international affiliate distributions.
Develop and maintain revenue recognition schedules in accordance with ASC 606, including monthly revenue accruals, deferred revenue tracking, and automated reversals based on consumption data and actual cash settlements.
Analyze, cleanse, and reconcile revenue reporting datasets from multiple digital service providers, using tools such as SAP Analysis for Office and AI-enabled analytics solutions to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
Reconcile operational reporting from source systems to the general ledger, connecting consumption metrics such as streams, downloads, play counts, and tiered rates with financial transactions to identify anomalies, missing catalog codes, underreported royalties, and system discrepancies.
Conduct detailed month-over-month and quarter-over-quarter variance analyses, identify key revenue drivers, and present findings and recommendations to label finance leadership.
Serve as the business lead for revenue accounting systems optimization across SAP ECC/S/4HANA, BlackLine, and proprietary music revenue subledger platforms.
Design, test, and implement automated reporting solutions that reduce manual journal entries, strengthen financial controls, improve reporting accuracy, and accelerate month-end close activities.
Oversee monthly and quarterly revenue close deliverables, including reviewing high-volume journal entries, complex accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations.
Review work performed by staff accountants and offshore shared services teams, including direct-to-consumer sales reconciliations, digital platform settlement matching, and clearing account analyses.
Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, provide structured feedback, and deliver technical guidance and training to accounting team members and shared services partners.
Investigate and resolve long-standing balances in revenue clearing, suspense, and partner withholding accounts, ensuring appropriate accounting treatment and timely resolution.
Maintain and enhance internal control frameworks in accordance with Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 (SOX 404), including segregation of duties, automated validation controls, and documentation of data lineage.
Act as the primary revenue accounting liaison for internal and external auditors, preparing audit schedules, account roll-forwards, sample testing documentation, and technical accounting memoranda.
Collaborate with label finance executives, commercial revenue operations, legal and business affairs, IT and data engineering teams, and corporate royalty functions to align accounting treatments with evolving contractual arrangements and business requirements.
Identify opportunities to improve data quality, streamline accounting workflows, strengthen revenue assurance, and implement scalable financial reporting solutions.
Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related analytical field is required. A master's degree in Accounting or Business Administration, or additional coursework in financial data analytics or information systems, is a significant advantage.
Professional certification: An active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or international equivalent is strongly preferred.
Accounting experience: 10–15 or more years of progressive, hands-on experience in corporate accounting, shared services, or Big Four public accounting environments.
Revenue accounting specialization: At least seven years of specialized experience in high-volume revenue accounting, billing assurance, or royalty accounting, preferably within the music, digital entertainment, streaming media, intellectual property, or licensing industries.
Revenue recognition expertise: Demonstrated experience implementing, managing, or overseeing ASC 606 revenue recognition requirements for complex transactions and multi-element contractual arrangements.
ERP and reconciliation systems: Extensive experience with enterprise resource planning systems, particularly SAP FI/CO and S/4HANA, and automated balance sheet reconciliation platforms such as BlackLine or Cadency.
Advanced analytical tools: Expert-level Microsoft Excel skills, including SAP Analysis for Office, Power Query, dynamic arrays, VBA/macros, and advanced formulas for complex financial modeling and data analysis.
Digital revenue platforms: Experience working with e-commerce and digital billing systems, including Shopify and digital service provider reporting portals, is highly desirable.
Financial reporting and controls: Strong knowledge of revenue accounting, general ledger reconciliations, accruals, deferred revenue, internal controls, and SOX compliance requirements.
Audit management: Experience supporting internal and external audits, preparing audit documentation, explaining accounting treatments, and responding to auditor inquiries.
Leadership and review: Demonstrated ability to oversee and review work completed by distributed, hybrid, or offshore accounting teams while maintaining consistent quality and compliance standards.
Data analysis and problem-solving: Strong ability to investigate complex data discrepancies, identify root causes, interpret large datasets, and translate findings into clear financial conclusions and executive-level summaries.
Process improvement and automation: A proactive approach to challenging manual workflows, developing scalable automated solutions, and continuously improving accounting operations.
Communication and collaboration: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work confidently with finance executives, technical teams, external auditors, and cross-functional stakeholders.
Organization and adaptability: Ability to manage competing priorities, meet demanding month-end and quarter-end deadlines, and maintain accuracy and sound judgment in a fast-paced environment.
