  1. Purpose of the Role

The Senior School Librarian is responsible for managing, developing and promoting the Senior School Library, and for ensuring students are encouraged to read and participate in activities and competitions linked to books.

  1. Key Responsibilities

Manage physical, traditional and electronic resources in order to contribute to the school’s aim, objectives and targets for learning.

Update and implement the school library policy, which includes legal compliance, copyright and health and safety legislation supporting the school in meeting its targets.

Plan the library budget, monitoring budget spend, so that resources are used to best effect.

Advise key colleagues within the school and establish a high profile within the wider learning community to ensure appropriate access to learning resources.

Train students and staff to use information resources in order to promote learning and extend patterns of teaching.

Plan and deliver the library’s contribution to information literacy programmes within the school, encouraging reader development.

Analyse current educational initiatives and trends in library and information services so that the service is based on the best and most up-to-date information and methods.

Manage, train and develop other members of the team, so that all staff have the skills for current and planned activities

Organisation of the school’s annual Book Fair and general support for Book Week

Liaise with the Junior School Librarian

  1. Person Specifications

3.1 Qualifications: Professional qualification in librarianship, information management or information science.

Chartered Member of CILIP or other professional body (Desirable)

3.2 Experience: At least 2 years’ experience working in a library or information centre of a school or university.

3.3 Skills and Competences: The ability to acquire, organise, promote, manage and disseminate a wide range of resources to meet the diverse needs of the community.

A knowledge of current education frameworks.

Effective organisational skills.

Strong communication skills.

Information literacy teaching skills: specifically to support independent learning.

Reader development initiatives, including positive promotion of library use.

Strategic planning skills.

Budget management skills

Knowledge, understanding and competence in ICT, with specific reference to information systems in school libraries

Ability to Keep up-to-date with newly released publications and selections.

Learning support skills.
