JOB DESCRIPTION

Toolroom Technician — Wire Cut (Wire EDM)

Job Title: Toolroom Technician — Wire Cut (Wire EDM) Specialist Department: Engineering / Toolroom / Tool Maintenance Reports To: Toolroom Manager / Toolroom Supervisor Primary Working Location: Toolroom Workshop Role Classification: Technical / Operational (Full-Time)

1. Position Overview

The Toolroom Technician operating the Wire Cut (Wire EDM) machine is responsible for setting up, programming, and operating precision CNC Wire Cut Machining equipment to fabricate high-precision tooling inserts, execute preventive maintenance and rectifications, implement approved Engineering Change Requests (ECR), and manufacture custom jigs, fixtures, and inspection gauges. The Wire Cut Technician ensures that all fabricated tooling components conform rigorously to verified 'Master Copy' drawings, maintains full lot traceability, and minimises production downtime caused by tooling wear or failures.

2. Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities span five core operational tasks across the tooling lifecycle:

  • New Tool & Component Fabrication: Fabricates precision mold components—including die blocks, cavity inserts, sliders, core pins, ejector pins, and matching plates—from verified 'Master Copy' drawings issued by the Tool Designer.Prepares newly wire-cut inserts for trial runs, ensuring dimensions meet drawing specifications before submitting sample shots (minimum 10 shots) to QA for First Article Inspection (FAI) qualification.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Executes Preventive Maintenance at designatedshot-count milestones (800k, 1.2M, and 1.5M shots). Re-wire-cuts deformed or'egg-shaped' ejector pin holes and core pin holes to oversized dimensions so replacement pins can be fitted. Re-machines worn slider slots, guide pin locations, and matching plate surfaces to restore parallelism and squareness tolerances ( ·
  • Tool Modifications & ECR Cut-Off Control: Executes physical tooling modifications (such as core pin clearance adjustments, cavity profile updates, shut-off grinding,or runner expansions) upon approval of an Engineering Change Request (ECR) or Process Change Request (PCR). Updates the Tool Service Request (TSR) form and Tool History Book. Coordinates with Production and QA to support physical WIP.
  • Jigs, Fixtures & Inspection Gauges: Manufactures custom holding jigs, tapping fixtures, deflashing nests, and QC measurement gauges required for secondary process operations (2nd Ops). Performs immediate wire-cut rectification or complete replacement of out-of-tolerance jigs and fixtures escalated by the 2nd Ops Supervisor during mass production.
  • Breakdown Repairs & TSR Logging: Responds promptly to Tool Service Requests(TSRs) raised by Casting or 2nd Ops technicians when production halts due to tooling failures (e.g., ejector jams, broken sliders, severe flash, or carbon buildup). Documents root causes, wire-cutting repair actions, and turnaround times in the TSR Form and Tool History Book before returning repaired tooling for QA confirmation.

3. ISO 9001 Compliance Requirements

  • Drawing Control: Verifies that all tool fabrication and modification workis performed strictly using 'Master Copy' stamped drawings. Strictly prohibits fabricating components from unverified or draft drawings.
  • Identification & Traceability: Ensures all wire-cut components are properly tagged with tool serial numbers, part numbers, and revision levels to maintain complete lot traceability from fabrication to press installation.
  • Customer-Provided Tool (CPT) Control: Inspects, stores, and handlescustomer-supplied tooling, dies, or inserts (CPTs) in clearly identified, segregated areas. Reports any CPT wear, damage, or required modifications within 24 hours to the Toolroom Manager.
  • Monitoring & Measuring Resources: Maintains proper handling, calibration, and storage of measuring instruments (micrometers, height gauges, calipers) used in the wire cut workshop.

4. Job Qualifications & Skill Requirements

  • Education & Training: National ITE Certificate (NITC/NTC-2/3) in Precision Engineering, Tool & Die Making, Manufacturing Technology, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Work Experience: Minimum 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience in setting up and operating CNC Wire EDM machines (e.g., Sodick) within a die-casting or plastic injection mould manufacturing environment.
  • Blueprint Reading & GD&T: Strong ability to read and interpret complexengineering assembly drawings, 2D blueprints, 3D CAD models, and GeometricDimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) symbols.
  • Technical Competency: Proficiency in calculating wire offset, cutting speeds, taper angles, and selecting appropriate brass/coated wires and dielectric fluid parameters for hardened tool steels (e.g., H13, SKD61, SKD11).
  • Measurement & Metrology: Experience using precision measuring equipment including optical comparators, toolmaker microscopes, height gauges, gauge blocks, and micrometers.
  • QMS & Safety Standards: Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems, 5S workshop organisation, safety protocols for high-voltage dielectric equipment, and basic ERP tool tracking.
