Sunyu Photonics develops wafer-level testing machines that help bring silicon photonics innovations from the lab to manufacturable products. As the industry evolves rapidly, our engineers solve complex, non-standard testing challenges through experimentation, innovation, and hands-on engineering. Our Photonics Test Engineers play a key role in developing test methodologies, improving processes, and shaping our systems based on real customer needs. The Role We are looking for a Junior Photonics Test Engineer to join our core technical team. This role is ideal for a fresh graduate who enjoys scientific investigation, hands-on experimentation, and solving real engineering problems . You will receive training in wafer-level photonics testing and gradually take ownership of real, customer-facing technical work. You will work closely with senior engineers on test methodology development, troubleshooting, system improvement, and machine development. As you gain experience, you will have opportunities to contribute directly to the development and performance of our testing systems. Responsibilities: Photonics Testing Perform wafer-level photonics measurements on silicon photonics devices, including optical alignment, insertion loss measurements, polarization control, and automated test flows.

Analyse test results and identify opportunities to improve test performance.

Test Development & Troubleshooting Develop and refine photonics test methodologies.

Troubleshoot complex test issues and investigate root causes.

Improve test stability, repeatability, and throughput.

System Development Develop and improve test algorithms and automated test flows.

Contribute to system capability and performance improvements.

Provide first-hand technical feedback to support machine and system design.

Customer & Project Support Support test demonstrations and testing services.

Assist with system installation, commissioning, and verification.

Provide customer training both on-site and remotely.

Support local and overseas projects when required.

Your work will directly influence how our systems are tested, improved, and ultimately delivered to customers. We are looking for a curious, hands-on, and technically minded engineer who enjoys understanding how things work and solving problems from first principles. You should: Hold a degree in Physics or a related science/engineering discipline . Background in silicon photonics, optics, semiconductor devices, or related fields is an advantage.

Have a strong technical interest in at least one of the following: Experimental or applied physics

Hardware development

Software development

Algorithms and numerical methods

Data analysis or modelling

Learn quickly and have a genuine curiosity about how things work.

Be investigative, analytical, and detail-oriented, with a strong interest in finding root causes.

Be comfortable with hands-on laboratory and system-level work.

Be execution-oriented and motivated to turn ideas into practical solutions.

Be comfortable working with uncertainty and learning through experimentation.

Be honest, reliable, accountable, and willing to take ownership of your work.

Be able to understand team objectives, break down tasks, and contribute towards shared goals.

Be able to work effectively in a fast-moving engineering environment.

Be willing to support customers and travel locally or overseas when required.

Be willing to work overtime when project requirements arise; overtime will be compensated with time off.

Who Will Succeed in This Role? You do not need to know everything on day one. What matters most is that you are curious, willing to learn, comfortable getting your hands dirty, and determined to find solutions when things do not work the first time . If you enjoy asking “Why does this happen?” , testing your ideas, and turning experiments into working solutions, we would like to hear from you.
