Mainframe SME

We are looking for an experienced Mainframe SME to join a large-scale modernization programme for a client operating in the financial services sector. The programme focuses on modernizing complex legacy and mainframe environments while introducing modern technologies such as Generative AI, cloud transformation and data migration. In this role, you will provide technical expertise across legacy environments and support the analysis and modernization of existing mainframe applications, processes and data structures. You will work with technologies such as COBOL, JCL, Assembler, mainframe file structures and copybooks, as well as tools including SORT, IDCAMS, CA-7 and Control-M. You will also contribute your mainframe expertise to modernization initiatives and explore the use of AI/ML and agent workflows to support the transformation of legacy systems.

Daily tasks

• Provide technical expertise across complex mainframe environments
• Analyse and maintain existing mainframe applications and processes
• Work with COBOL-based applications and mainframe programs
• Analyse and work with JCL and mainframe job scheduling
• Work with mainframe file structures, datasets and copybooks
• Support data and application analysis as part of modernization initiatives
• Work with SORT and IDCAMS utilities
• Work with enterprise job scheduling tools such as CA-7 or Control-M
• Analyse dependencies between legacy applications, jobs and data structures
• Support the assessment and modernization of existing mainframe solutions
• Collaborate with architects, developers and other technical specialists
• Contribute mainframe expertise to broader legacy modernization initiatives
• Explore and support the use of AI/ML technologies in modernization activities
• Contribute to the design or implementation of AI-assisted agent workflows

Requirements

Several years of professional experience in mainframe environments Strong hands-on experience with COBOL Strong knowledge of JCL Experience with Assembler Good understanding of mainframe file structures and copybooks Experience with SORT and IDCAMS Experience with CA-7 and/or Control-M Strong understanding of legacy application environments and mainframe architecture Ability to analyse complex legacy systems and dependencies Experience supporting or participating in modernization initiatives Understanding of AI/ML concepts and their potential application in software or legacy modernization Understanding of AI agent workflows Good analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to communicate effectively with technical stakeholders Good command of English
