Job Description

Contribute to achieving the university’s strategic and faculty operational plans by providing effective management and academic leadership within the department.

The dean is accountable to the DVC Academic Affairs for matters relating to the management of faculty staff, the organisation of teaching, research and associated activities, and the effective performance of staff duties.

The dean is required to be in regular communication with faculty staff and responsive to staff and the interests of the wider university community.

The dean will demonstrate vision, strong management skills, an ability to acquire resources, and the skills to empower and influence others to contribute to getting the job done. The methods by which the dean carries out the duties and the extent of delegation will depend on factors such as the size and nature of the faculty.

Academic leadership is often shared, particularly through the support of the faculty’s academic staff. The dean is ultimately accountable for the management of the faculty.
