Expert Listing is a Lagos-based proptech startup building Nigeria's most trusted property marketplace. We verify every listing through physical inspections and document checks, and back it with two years of historical pricing data, live location maps, and flood-risk indicators - so renters and buyers can tell in three clicks, not months, whether they're getting a fair deal. We're small, fast-moving, and solving a real transparency problem in one of Africa's biggest real estate markets.

The Role

We're hiring a Frontend Engineer to help build and scale our web experience - from our public listings platform (Next.js/React) to the internal tools our verification and pricing teams rely on. You'll work closely with the founder and product/design to ship quickly without breaking the trust of users who depend on accurate data.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain user-facing features across our Next.js/React web app: search, filters, maps, listings, and the professional directory

• Translate designs into responsive, accessible, high-performance interfaces

• Work with real, sometimes messy geographic and pricing data (maps, price history, flood-zone overlays) without compromising load times

• Collaborate with backend engineers on API contracts and with the founder on product decisions

• Own code quality - testing, code review, and sensible technical tradeoffs as the codebase and team grow

What We're Looking For

• Strong hands-on experience with React (Next.js a strong plus) and modern JavaScript/TypeScript

• Comfort with real-world state management, data fetching, and performance optimization

• An eye for UI/UX detail and responsive, mobile-first design

• Experience with maps, geolocation, or data-heavy UIs is a bonus

• 2+ years of professional experience - we're open to both mid-level and senior engineers; the screening task below helps us understand where you land

Screening Task (required)

Build a small typeahead/autocomplete search component (React, ideally Next.js) that queries any public API of your choice (for example a country, city, or postal-code API) as the user types.

Your solution should handle: debounced input, loading/empty/error states, keyboard navigation, and out-of-order or stale responses.

Submit a link to your code (GitHub repo or CodeSandbox) along with a short write-up (150-300 words) covering: the tradeoffs you made, how you'd scale or harden this for high traffic, and how you'd test it.

We're less interested in a "perfect" solution than in how you reason through the tradeoffs - that's what tells us the most about your level of experience.
